AGA TODAY

Highlights

The GAR Report is a monthly summary of membership numbers by chapter. In the Chapter Recognition Program, up to 3,000 credits are available in the Membership Section in the areas of Base Growth, New Member Acquisition and Retention.

The GAR lists chapters by size (Group A = 300 or more members; Group B = 150-299 members, etc.). We also publish a GAR by region. It may be useful to see how individual regions compare. Don’t remember what the columns and numbers mean? Read a detailed explanation of the GAR Report.

Chapter Recruitment Scholarship Write-Ups
Did your chapter receive a Chapter Recruitment Scholarship? If you have not yet done so, please take a brief moment to provide a short description of how your chapter used its funds during the 2007-2008 membership year and e-mail it to Kim Ferguson. Your input will be included in AGA’s Chapter Successful Practices document that can be accessed by all chapters through the Members Only site. Sharing top recruiting techniques not only showcases your chapter’s hard work, but also strengthens the Association as we learn from each other.

2008 Rally for Retention Campaign Prepares to Kick Off
As May, the official ‘AGA Retention Month’ draws near, we will be asking your help to encourage members to renew!

Members have a 60-day grace period from March 31 to May 31 to renew their memberships. After May 31, members who have yet to renew will be suspended from the active member roles and subsequently no longer receive any AGA benefits, including all publications, member discounts on conferences and chapter newsletters. Let’s encourage them to renew before this happens through the 2008 Rally for Retention Chapter Contest!

Soon we will be e-mailing lists of those members who have not yet renewed to chapter representatives. We will ask that each chapter personally contact those members listed in their chapter and remind them to renew before they are suspended. Each member is important to the strength of each AGA chapter family, and AGA national as well. There is no better way to remind members of their value to us than through personal contact!

Chapters that get half or more of their members who haven’t yet renewed as of April 30 to renew by May 31 will be eligible for fabulous AGA prizes. Read more details on prizes and the 2008 Rally for Retention Game Plan. Contact Kim Ferguson with questions.

Friday Deadline Nears for Newsletter Contest
Attention chapter newsletter editors: If you have not entered the 2007-2008 chapter newsletter editor contest, submit copies of your chapter’s September, January and February newsletters to Chris Camara by COB Friday, April 18. When all entries are in, we will pick ONE month out of a hat and all entries from that month will be judged. A volunteer committee of past award recipients will select one first-place and one honorable mention recipient in each chapter group. (Chris is still looking for a couple of judges. If you won last year, let her know if you’re interested.)

All AGA chapter websites are automatically entered into the website contest. A committee of volunteer judges will review all working chapter websites during the week of April 21. Click here to check your chapter’s listing. This page is used to build our website judging lists every year. Contact April Pardoe if you have questions.

Let’s celebrate the achievements of AGA's 2007-2008 chapter communicators who have produced outstanding newsletters and websites. We’ll announce the award recipients in May, although the formal presentations will be made during PDC, set for July 27–30 in Atlanta. All award recipients must be members of AGA. Good luck!

Check out the award recipients from 2006-2007 and the awards criteria.

Roger Mazula, CGFM, is one of AGA's most experienced chapter newsletter editors. He agreed to respond to a Q&A that contains a number of tips and tools to help AGA chapter communicators improve their newsletters. Roger is Vice President for Communications for the New York Capital Chapter, and produces "Capital Ideas," which received the top award for Group A chapters for the 2006-2007 program year. Members Dream Big as the ‘We Have a Dream’ Recruitment Campaign Enters its Final Stretch
Stephanie K. Paschel, Cleveland chapter, has recruited her 50th member and is in the lead for Recruiter of the Year. Right behind her is Lori L. Hendon, Idaho Centennial chapter, with 49 recruits. Who will recruit the most? It’s anyone’s guess with a little less than three weeks left in the 2007–2008 We Have a Dream member-get-a-member campaign.

Our members are also dreaming big when it comes to recruiting future government financial management leaders—our early career members. The AGA member who recruits the most early career members will be awarded with a fabulous BOSE Wave Music System (valued at $499). Paschel is in the lead for that prize, having recruited 31 early career members.

More than 2,300 individuals have joined AGA this past year. The Association’s net growth in membership is the result of many factors and many people.

Remember, all new member applications must be received at the National Office by April 30, 2008, to be included in the contest. Keep recruiting! Read more about the campaign.

PDC Chapter Hotel Scholarships

The 57th Annual Professional Development Conference & Exposition (PDC) is just a few months away…have you made your hotel reservations?  If not, make yours today by calling the Atlanta Marriott Marquis at 888.829.1396. Be sure to mention you’re attending the “AGA PDC” to ensure you receive the discounted rate ($129 per night).

Once again, AGA is proud to offer the Chapter Hotel Scholarship program. This opportunity covers room and tax for two individuals from each AGA chapter for up to five nights at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis. Please note: The hotel reservation process is different this year. Members chosen by their chapter to receive the hotel scholarship are responsible for making their own reservations.

Approximately one month before the conference, individuals participating in the hotel scholarship program will be asked to provide their confirmation numbers and arrival/departure dates to AGA, so that we may move their room and tax charges to our master account. But don’t wait, the hotel sells out quickly; please book your room as soon as possible. This is a wonderful chapter benefit. We hope see you in July!

Questions? Please contact Jessica Jones.

CGFM Month Initiative Is a Huge Success

We want to thank all of the chapter and regional leaders for making the CGFM month a huge success.

The initiative started in 2004 when one of the CGFM regional coordinators obtained a proclamation declaring April a CGFM month in Wisconsin. Ever since, the project has grown every year, with more and more states and local governments declaring March “CGFM Month.” To recognize the CGFM Program and its accomplishments, AGA has declared the month of March of each year as "CGFM Month."

Thanks to the initiative and dedication of AGA regional and chapter leaders, at least 45 state and local governments have declared March 2008 as "CGFM Month." The proclamations that were received by the national office are posted on the AGA website.

New IRS Filing Requirements; E-Postcard Now Available

Beginning in 2008, small tax-exempt organizations that previously were not required to file a Form 990 (or 990-EZ), Return of Organization Exempt from Income Tax, because their gross receipts were normally $25,000 or less, will now be required to file an annual electronic notice. Many AGA chapters fall within this category and will be required to file the annual electronic notice by the 15th day of the fifth month after the close of the tax period. This filing requirement applies to tax periods beginning after Dec. 31, 2007.

The notice will require you to provide the following information: organization’s legal name, mailing address and website, EIN, name and address of principal officer, fiscal year, verification that the organization’s annual gross receipts are still normally $25,000 or less, and indicate whether the organization has terminated (no longer in business).

The form required to file all this information is called 990-N (e-Postcard) and it is already available. Read more.
