The Government Accountability Office has released a list of 13 urgent issues that will command the attention of President Obama and the 111th Congress during the first year of the new administration and Congress. The Acting Comptroller General discusses these urgent challenges facing the nation, and how to help new appointees in every agency zero in on the issues facing that particular agency, and identify areas with the potential to save the nation billions of dollars.

T101: The U.S. Housing Crisis and the Government Response

This session covers the unprecedented turmoil in U.S. housing markets over the last two years and the comprehensive and adaptive response from the federal government. The director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) outlines the efforts made by the Bush administration and his agency to achieve government-sponsored enterprise (GSE) regulatory reform. The Housing and Economic Recovery Act, which passed in July 2008, created the new GSE regulator FHFA and provided expanded authorities to regulate Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and the 12 Federal Home Loan Banks. Lockhart also covers the unprecedented decision to place the $5 trillion Fannie and Freddie into conservatorship; foreclosure prevention activities; and the actions of the Department of the Treasury and the Federal Reserve Board. As a member of the Financial Stability Oversight Board, he also reviews efforts to stabilize the U.S. financial system.

AGA's Second Annual Government Finance Case Challenge—Finals

College teams from across the country collaboratively designed a citizen-centric report for the fictional city of Cloverdale, NC. Out of the 17 participating universities, the University of Nebraska at Omaha and the University of North Carolina at Pembroke were selected as finalists in this competition. Each team offers a maximum 25-minute presentation of its case response to a panel of judges at the NLC. The winning team receives cash prizes and one free year of AGA membership. Best wishes to both teams!
