Where to Find Information on CGFM CPE Requirements
AGA's Interpretation of Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Requirements booklet provides excellent CPE guidance, including examples of topics and subjects that qualify, criteria for CPE programs and measuring CPE hours.

Intensive Review Course a Success at NLC
The Intensive Review Course was again a big hit! Offered now for the second time at the National Leadership Conference (NLC) in Washington D.C. on February 1–2, it was sold out at 50 participants. After attending the two-day review course, the candidates tackled the CGFM Examinations over the next two days (with some taking all three exams in one day!). As a result, 23 of the participants passed all three (or finished up their remaining) CGFM Examinations at this event—even more than at the similar event in July of last year. Others passed one or two examinations and are on their way to completing the CGFM process. Click here to learn more.

March 1, 2006, Special Issue for CGFMs

AGA Celebrates CGFM Month!
Did you know that March is CGFM Month? Yes, starting this year and going forward, AGA has declared March CGFM Month (read the official proclamation). In addition, thanks to the efforts of AGA chapters, several states have joined us by declaring March CGFM Month as well—read the proclamations page.

The CGFM Program has a lot of reasons to celebrate. Last year brought a record 50 percent increase in applications, 73 percent increase in new CGFMs and 96 percent retention rate of current CGFMs! The CGFM Program is growing, the credential is becoming more valuable and recognized, and we want to thank all of you for being part of this success.

We appreciate your support and wish you the best of luck in your endeavors!

Leaders Explain Why CGFM is Critical to Success
AGA asked its national leaders why maintaining the CGFM credential was so important to them. The responses reflected a variety of reasons, including improved service to citizens, a competitive advantage in the industry, a demonstrated commitment to continuous learning, and more. See what these CGFM leaders had to say: Milton Barr, David Bell, Bobby Derrick, Jeffrey Hart, Joseph A. Kapelewski, Tom Sadowski and Capt. Larry A. White.

CGFM Helps PwC's Federal Practice Better Serve its Government Clients
“Stale, old and dated,” was how Carter Pate described his knowledge of federal financial management when he was asked to reinvigorate the U.S. federal practice for PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, but that was before he teamed up with AGA to earn his CGFM. Pate, a managing partner in Dallas, moved to Washington, D.C. in July 2004 after more than 20 years on the commercial side. Although he is a nationally known business restructuring expert, author, former CEO and chairman of several public companies and founding partner of his own national consulting firm, Pate still worried he was rusty on the specifics of governmental accounting. Pate asked around, looking for the best course of study to improve his skills. A number of government finance professionals suggested earning the CGFM credential. “It was exactly what I was looking for,” Pate said. Click here to read the entire article.

New PCB Member: Financial Managers Are Integral Part of Decision-making Team
Capt. Larry White, CGFM, CPA, CMA, CFM, believes government finance professionals play a key role in managing their agencies that goes well beyond preparing required financial reports. It’s not enough to produce reliable and timely accounting information. Government financial managers must do a better job of explaining how program managers can connect accounting data, broader economic and nonfinancial data to make better operational decisions. White, the newest member of AGA’s Professional Certification Board (PCB), says AGA’s CGFM credential contributes to this goal by helping financial managers see the big picture. The three CGFM Examinations focus not only on the importance of clean financial statements, but a wide range of business issues covering all three levels of government. Grant Thornton Makes CGFM a Top Priority for its Public Sector Staff
When you need to fulfill a continuing education requirement of 40 hours per year, there’s no shortage of training choices. Grant Thornton LLP has made the process simpler for its Public Sector financial management staff members. The firm brings the series of three CGFM training courses to its employees, then encourages them to take the next step and sit for the three CGFM Examinations. Why the CGFM? Clifton A. Williams, CGFM, CPA, a partner in Grant Thornton’s Global Public Sector, said the courses offer a solid foundation in financial management at all three levels of government while giving staff members a chance to earn a valuable certification.
