PDC 2008 Under Way in Atlanta

Former Comptroller General of the United States David M. Walker, CPA, opened AGA’s 57th Annual Professional Development Conference & Exposition with a thought-provoking presentation that he titled “Creating a Better Future.” Now President and CEO of the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, Walker is leading a grassroots effort to call attention to the U.S. government’s worsening fiscal situation.

He began his remarks by noting an article in yesterday morning’s USA Today about the soaring federal deficit. The Bush administration has increased its earlier 2009 budget deficit estimate of $407 billion to the new record-breaking figure of $490 billion. Read the full coverage of Walker's remarks.

Make a note! David Walker will be our guest on the AGA Blog on Thursday, July 31. Visit the blog at http://aga.typepad.com/aga/.

Civil Rights Leader and Pastor Andrew Young

Andrew Young, civil rights leader, former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and mayor of Atlanta in the 1980s, left the PDC attendees with an inspiring message of unity and hope during Monday’s keynote speech.

Speaking of his history with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference during the tumultuous years of the civil rights movement, to his subsequent key role in international economic development during the Carter administration and later as mayor and private businessman, Young stressed that success in all cases depended on working together.

“I think that’s what gives us hope for the world,” he said. “We are all on the same side. We are all in the same boat.” Read more of Andrew Young's remarks.
