AGA TODAY

Highlights

The GAR Report is a monthly summary of membership numbers by chapter. In the Chapter Recognition Program, up to 3,000 credits are available in the Membership Section in the areas of Base Growth, New Member Acquisition and Retention.

The GAR lists chapters by size (Group A = 300 or more members; Group B = 150-299 members, etc.). We also publish a GAR by region. It may be useful to see how individual regions compare. Don’t remember what the columns and numbers mean? Read a detailed explanation of the GAR Report.

Cyberspace…Changing the Way You Network
AGA prides itself in its well-developed network of government financial managers. Members can tap into that network in a variety of ways, from the traditional conferences focusing on advancing your career to the ever-evolving resources on the Web. In the last few months, we’ve received a lot of encouragement from members to broaden our presence on the Web. This has led to our own channel on YouTube as well as an AGA group on LinkedIn. In the coming months, stayed tuned for the introduction of AGA’s very own Facebook Page.

These initiatives will complement AGA’s existing networking programs. AGA is offering more places for members to make connections, find information and keep pace with what’s happening at AGA. For more information on how you or your chapter can get involved in social networking, contact Rodneikka Freeman.

Renewal Time is Here
A little investment of your time means a big investment in a colleague’s future. Ever wonder what it takes to recruit members to AGA? A quick call or a conversation at a meeting can help a friend or colleague succeed professionally. It’s a simple way to give back to the Association and profession while expanding your circle of contacts. By recruiting a member, you will earn AGA bucks and gain valuable recognition for your efforts and your chapter!

Renewals are streaming into the National Office, but don’t forget to remind all of your members to recommit themselves to AGA for 2009-2010 by renewing today. Better yet, suggest that your members join. It’s quick and easy!

Don’t forget, if your members have any problem renewing or any questions concerning their invoice, you can direct them to the Customer Satisfaction Center at 800.AGA.7211. We are happy to help.

AGA 2009 Survey
AGA is sponsoring an online member survey to learn your thoughts about current and future government financial management issues. AGA Corporate Partner Grant Thornton LLP is administering the survey. All responses are anonymous, and the results will be presented at the 2009 PDC in New Orleans.

To encourage responses to the survey, AGA will give the chapter with the highest response rate a cash award of $300; second highest will receive $200 and third will receive $100. The award will be based on the number of responses received per chapter divided by the total registered membership of a chapter. Please be sure to enter your chapter’s name when you fill out the survey.

Thanks for your help in promoting the survey. If you have any questions about AGA’s research initiatives, please contact AGA’s Director of Research Anna Miller.

PDC Community Service Raffle and Silent Auction
AGA is proud to once again sponsor the National Community Service Raffle and Silent Auction. During the PDC, we’ll be selling raffle tickets and hosting a silent auction for great prizes such as gift certificates, regional gift baskets, sports memorabilia and lots more. Be sure to visit the Exhibit Hall to check out the loot.

Proceeds will support the AGA National Community Service Fund as well as a charity selected by participants. Make sure to stop by the raffle booth and vote for your favorite charity. Chapters are asked to donate prizes from their local areas; contact raffle coordinator Renee Gilman, CGFM, to donate.

Community Service Photo Contest
It’s time again to show off all that your chapter does for the community. Submit as many pictures as you’d like of chapter members participating in community service events throughout the past year. The winning entry will be selected by AGA staff and will receive a free registration for a national conference. Submissions are due by May 15. Questions? Please contact Jessica Jones

Questions Needed for Ethics Audio Conference
Want to participate in developing the ethics audio conference presentation on May 13? Well, you can. This ethics audio conference will be somewhat different from past programs. The speaker will discuss ethics in the workplace and will explain the thinking and understanding behind elements of ethical behavior. Real examples will be used as well as describing the differences between being ethical and legal. Other topics will include organizational tone with examples from the top of organizations, risk-taking, the need for written policies, the requirement for uniform enforcement and other requirements of the federal code of ethics.

During the presentation, the speaker will answer your questions, submitted in advance. Participants are asked to submit written questions to Raymond Harris, CGFM, by May 4 to give the speaker sufficient time to incorporate them into his presentation. This should make it a lively session. Read more.

Take the CGFM Examinations Before the PDC
Don't miss the opportunity to take the CGFM Examinations and earn your CGFM before the annual Professional Development Conference (PDC) in New Orleans. AGA is offering a two-day Intensive Review Course on Thursday, June 18 and Friday, June 19 and an opportunity to take CGFM Examinations on June 20-21. The cost of the course is only $249 for qualified participants, and it offers 18 CPE hours. Special Bonus: the CGFM Examinations are offered at no cost to course attendees.

This course is designed as a supplement to previous preparation for the CGFM Examinations, so this is a perfect opportunity for those individuals who have already attended GFM training courses or have been preparing by using the CGFM Study Guides. Enrollment is limited and participants must first apply and be accepted into the CGFM Program, so don't delay.

More information and a registration form for this event are available on AGA's website

PDC 2009 Chapter Hotel Scholarships
The 58th Annual Professional Development Conference (PDC) will take place June 21-24 in New Orleans, LA. This year, conference attendees will be housed in two headquarter hotels. Chapters wishing to participate in the hotel scholarship (two scholarships per chapter) will be housed in the Sheraton New Orleans. The Sheraton is now taking reservations and can be reached at 888.627.7033; be sure to mention that you are attending the “AGA PDC” to receive the discounted rate.

The AGA room rate is $120 per night (plus tax) for single and double occupancy. Rates are only guaranteed until May 29, 2009, or until the block is sold out. We encourage you to make your hotel reservations early, for the best price and availability. Rooms booked at other hotels will not be covered under the hotel scholarship.

AGA Courses Help Managers Track Stimulus Dollars
Spending billions and billions of dollars of stimulus funds in a hurry is a formidable task. But tracking and accounting for these billions of dollars is far more formidable and much more difficult.

AGA is offering three courses to help in managing and accounting for these funds. They include:

Grants Management—This course provides a general overview of grants management, including preparation, review and submittal of proposals; negotiation and acceptance of grants; post-award financial and administrative management; closeout and audit; and relevant compliance issues.

Contract Auditing—This course focuses on the purpose of contract auditing, types of contracts, audit clauses to include in contracts, types of audits included in contract audit oversight, development of audit programs and internal audit, accounting and financial issues involved with procurements.

Fraud Detection and Prevention—This course is designed to help organizations cut this cost from their programs to reap benefits at the bottom line and in the eyes of stakeholders. In this course you will learn what is fraud; how to detect it in the normal course of program operations; what to do when fraud is detected and how to develop measures to correct practices that enabled fraud to happen.

Taught at the location of your choice, the courses include lectures, group discussion and exercises and class problem-solving. They can be customized to meet your needs and participants are awarded CPEs at the conclusion of each course.

For course pricing and additional information about course content, please contact Bekka Gehrmann, at 800.AGA.7211 ext. 309.
