AGA TODAY

Highlights

The GAR Report is a monthly summary of membership numbers by chapter. In the Chapter Recognition Program, up to 3,000 credits are available in the Membership Section in the areas of Base Growth, New Member Acquisition and Retention.

The GAR lists chapters by size (Group A = 300 or more members; Group B = 150-299 members, etc.). We also publish a GAR by region. It may be useful to see how individual regions compare. Don’t remember what the columns and numbers mean? Read a detailed explanation of the GAR Report.

Chapter Communicator News
• Roger Mazula, the vice president of communications for AGA's New York Capital Chapter, is leading a task force of chapter communicators who are examining the judging criteria for AGA's annual newsletter and website contents. The task force, which is made up of webmasters and newsletter editors from each chapter group, hopes to develop updated sets of criteria this fall to be used for the contests this spring. Stay tuned! Questions? Contact Chris Camara.

•  Did you know that AGA offers an interactive website designed to meet the needs of chapter newsletter editors and website managers? Chapter communicators have asked for a way to talk to each other, so we have set up a Yahoo group. This group allows you to swap questions and answers, best practices, even newsletter articles. Our goal is to provide chapter communicators with access to the most important Association news and events so that you can pass this vital information on to your chapter members. Sign up today!

Each liaison or “captain” helps disseminate chapter offerings within their organization, particularly to nonmembers who would not otherwise know about the events. Read more about the Chapter Captains program under the Chapter Successful Practices link in Members Only. Submit your chapter's creative ideas today!

  • AGA’s scholarship program will not cover higher room costs for reservations made after the deadline or the after the block is sold out. Rooms sell out quickly…we encourage you to make your hotel reservations early.
  • To make a reservation, please call the Orlando World Center Marriott at 800.621.0638 and mention you are attending the “AGA PDC” to receive the discounted rate. Please do not mention the scholarship, as this may cause confusion when trying to book a room.

Earn Bonus Chapter Recognition Credits by Encouraging Citizen-Centric Reports
Earn Chapter Recognition bonus credits for the 2009-2010 Year under Section V, Membership:

  • Make contact with a government, encourage them to produce and publish a four-page Citizen Centric Report—100 credits per contact made; please forward information to Susan Fritzlen.
  • Government that you contacted produces and publishes a four-page Citizen Centric Report—500 credits per published report; please forward a PDF of the published report to Susan Fritzlen.

The Citizen-Centric Report is a four-page document, produced annually, that clearly expresses the state of government finances in a way that avoids complex, off-putting technical detail and presents information in a visually appealing, clear and straightforward format. Reports follow a suggested format, with the first page laying out community information; the second, a performance report on key missions and services; the third, cost and revenue information; and the fourth, a look forward to the year ahead. Completed reports are made available to citizens in hard copy and digital formats.

AGA offers a Certificate of Excellence in Citizen-Centric Reporting for governmental entities that prepare and distribute exceptional reports. To be eligible for the Certificate of Excellence, governments must incorporate into their report the program’s high standards of content, visual appeal, readability, distribution and timeliness in reporting.

We need your help in advancing the program. Please reach out to your state and local governments today!

Complimentary Electronic Memberships for Professors
AGA and its chapters have long been reaching out to college and university students and professors to introduce them to AGA and careers in government. AGA is offering each chapter the opportunity to award up to three complimentary, one-year electronic memberships to professors in their local colleges and universities. What are the tangible benefits of this special offer? Each recipient will receive AGA’s weekly newsletters—TOPICS and AGA Today—and access to the members’ only areas of the website to read AGA's Journal of Government Financial Management as well as AGA’s research reports. We hope that they in turn will share this information with their students.

How to get started: Chapters may submit up to three names of professors to Rodneikka Scott for consideration. Chapters should submit as much contact information as possible (full name, title, school, email, address, etc.). Once AGA has the names, we will reach out to the professor with a welcome e-mail. Periodically, we will reach out to them and highlight another benefit of AGA membership. Finally, toward the end of their complimentary year, we will encourage them to join as a full member.

Academicians who are current AGA members are not eligible for this special offer. Each complimentary e-membership will be valid until Dec. 31, 2010. The electronic members will not be counted in the official rolls of AGA membership.
