CGFM Helps PwC's Federal Practice
Better
Serve its Government Clients
“Stale, old and dated,” was how Carter Pate
described his knowledge of federal financial management when he was
asked to reinvigorate the U.S. federal practice for
PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, but that was before he teamed up with AGA
to earn his CGFM. Pate, a managing partner in Dallas, moved to
Washington, D.C. in July 2004 after more than 20 years on the
commercial side. Although he is a nationally known business
restructuring expert, author, former CEO and chairman of several public
companies and founding partner of his own national consulting firm,
Pate still worried he was rusty on the specifics of governmental
accounting. Pate asked around, looking for the best course of study to
improve his skills. A number of government finance professionals
suggested earning the CGFM credential. “It was exactly what I was
looking for,” Pate said. Read the entire article.

CGFM Profile: Marlene K.
Dorenkamp
When
Marlene K. Dorenkamp became president of AGA’s Des Moines
Chapter, she wanted to set an example for her fellow chapter members,
give herself an injection of confidence and show that attaining the
CGFM credential was “doable.” “I thought that it
would be good incentive for others if I went ahead and took it and let
them know if it was achievable,” Dorenkamp said. That she did, by
passing the three examinations and becoming the first chapter member to
become a CGFM through the exam process. It took Dorenkamp one year to
study and pass the exams, finishing up in November 2005. When she
achieved her goal, the chapter did not overlook it. The current chapter
president, Michelle Wendel, and other members recognized her at last
November’s Chapter Executive Committee meeting with a certificate
and cupcakes. The next month, the chapter presented her with a
scholarship, to defray some of her costs, and a cake in her honor. Read

Help Needed to Design a Case
Competition
for Accounting Students
To promote careers in government, AGA is
looking for interested individuals who would like to build a case
competition to be showcased at major colleges and universities
across the country. The case competition will feature an actual
government financial management issue that an entity is currently
facing. The finished case will be presented to college students on
a weeknight with presentations by the students on the following
Saturday. Prizes will be awarded by AGA to the top
finalists. The competition will be open to all students
considering a career in the government financial management
industry. This competition will create exposure to numerous
college students. All those interested in developing this
case competition may be involved in such activities
as: researching other successful case competitions, developing the
actual case, contacting universities and colleges to present the
case competition, judging the cases, awarding prizes, or acting as
ambassadors for AGA and their own governmental agency. If you are
interested in this project, or if you have any questions, please
contact Jennifer I. Curtin, MPA at jcurtin@agacgfm.org, or at
800.AGA.7211, ext. 340.
