IIA President William G. Bishop III, CIA, Dies at 63
_____________________________________________________________________________________________

The Institute of Internal Auditors Chairman Bob McDonald has announced the death of IIA President William G. Bishop   III, CIA, who apparently suffered a heart attack while jogging near his home in Longwood, FLA, on March 7.

“This is a huge shock,” McDonald said in a statement on The IIA’s website, “and I am sure that we all are immensely saddened by his sudden passing.”

The IIA headquarters has been flooded with messages from around the world, honoring the difference Bishop made in the personal and professional lives of so many, McDonald said.

“This is a time to grieve for Bill, but it also is a moment to celebrate his life and the great memories we all have of a man who was more than the president of The IIA: Bill was a great friend to us all.”

The Bishop family has requested that donations be made in lieu of flowers to The IIA Research Foundation or the South Seminole Christian Sharing Center. See The IIA home page at www.theiaa.org for more information. The AGA membership and staff extend condolences to our friends at the Institute of Internal Auditors.

 ISSUE SPOTLIGHT: AGA’s CGFM Program

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

April is CGFM Month in Wisconsin
_____________________________________________________________________________________________

AGA’s Southern Wisconsin Chapter has solicited support for the Association’s CGFM certification from the top officials in state government—Governor James Doyle and Secretary of State Douglas La Follette.

And with no hesitation, the governor’s office issued an official proclamation declaring April Certified Government Financial Manager month in the state of Wisconsin.

“Promoting improved government financial management is what they’re all about,” said the chapter’s CGFM chairman David Mellem, CGFM. He came up with the proclamation idea by taking a cue from the local chapter of The Institute of Internal Auditors, which received recognition from the governor on its 20th anniversary two years ago. Mellem wrote a proposed proclamation for the governor’s office that briefly describes AGA and the Southern Wisconsin chapter, its commitment to advancing government accountability, and the rigorous testing and education requirements to earn and maintain the CGFM designation.

The proclamation reads in part that chapter members have “responded to AGA’s mission of Advancing Government Accountability, as it continues its broad educational efforts, with emphasis on high standards of conduct, honor, and character in its Code of Ethics, and are making significant advances both in professional ability and in service to the citizens of Wisconsin by mastering increasingly technical and complex requirements…” (www.aga-wis.org/pdffiles/200403news.pdf) Read the full article at www.agacgfm.org/publications/topics/031504/wisconsin.aspx

CGFM Recognized in NY Office of State Comptroller
_____________________________________________________________________________________________

The persistence of AGA’s New York Capital Chapter has resulted in recognition of the CGFM certification within the Office of State Comptroller, which employs more auditing, accounting and finance professionals than any other agency in New York State government.

CGFM recognition means that applicants for two of the major job titles in the office—state program examiner and municipal program examiner—can earn two points on an entry-level rating exam that assesses education, qualifications and experience. The highest rating is 15 points.

Chapter president Kirk Schanzenbach, who is also with the Office of State Comptroller (OSC), said earning the CGFM will not only help job applicants, but also employees seeking promotion. Participating in professional associations and maintaining certifications are formally considered as a factor in the performance assessment promotion process.  Nashville Chapter Continues Strong Support for CGFM
_____________________________________________________________________________________________

AGA's Nashville Chapter continues its strong support of the CGFM Program with a CGFM Exam 2 training session, worth 8 CPE hours, set for March 29 in the 15th Floor Conference Room of the James K. Polk Building.

The chapter started a CGFM "brainstorming session" two years ago for colleagues to share reading materials that were particularly useful, practical advice on taking the three computerized exams and study tips. The chapter's CGFM committee saw such strong turnout and enthusiasm for the session that the committee has continued to find ways to help members achieve the goal of earning the CGFM certification.

Anyone interested in attending the training session, which is specific to Exam 2, Governmental Accounting, Financial Reporting and Budgeting, can send an e-mail to Gerry Boaz, CGFM, at Gerry.Boaz@state.tn.us

In addition, the CGFM Committee purchased two CGFM Exam 2 Study Guides, which are available for checkout by those individuals who will be applying for the exams by September 2004. Anyone interested in buying a study guide can do so through the AGA website at www.agacgfm.org.

 Save Time—Renew Your Membership Online
_____________________________________________________________________________________________

By now, you should have received your annual renewal packages for the 2004–2005 year. If you have already renewed your membership, we thank you and look forward to serving you in the year to come.

If not, please note that your renewal package includes both membership and CGFM certification renewals where applicable. The cost of CGFM Program operations has necessitated a modest $10 increase in the CGFM renewal fee. (See the item below on CGFM renewal requirements.)

The renewal form has a new look this year that includes a receipt at the bottom. This year’s renewal package also includes a Member Information Sheet (demographic and contact information). Please be sure to fill this out and return to AGA. It is so very important that we have your updated contact and demographic information. This helps the National Office and your chapter to stay in touch with you. It is also very important for AGA to capture your demographic information (including age, ethnicity, employer, education). We promise that this information will only be used to customize AGA services to your needs.

By far the easiest (and quickest) way to renew is online through the password-protected Members Only section of the AGA website. How to Renew Online: Access the AGA website at www.agacgfm.org. Click on ‘Members Only’ on the left palette. Login using your membership ID number and password (your first initial followed by your last name— no spaces), click on the gray ‘billing’ button above your name (if the gray billing button doesn’t appear, it means that your membership is paid in full). All you have to do is input your credit card information and hit ‘Submit.’ The transaction will automatically process via our secure server and the renewal information will be automatically updated in AGA’s in-house membership system. While you are logged into the Members Only section, be sure to take a look at your contact information and make any updates as necessary (especially your e-mail address).

Remember, 2004–2005 renewal payments are due by March 31, 2004. Thank you for your continued support!
