NEW! AGA Webcast —XBRL: Improving Government Communication
Two Offerings Available: April 18 or April 25, 2007

2 CPE Hours!
Join your peers in a FREE webcast to learn how data and business
information can be made interactive through an XML-based standard called XBRL (Extensible Business Reporting Language). This is NOT a new technology, it's a new standard in how information is created, stored, distributed and analyzed that will affect how you communicate with your peers and how you evaluate your own performance. XBRL has already been adopted by the Securities & Exchange Commission and by the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC) here in the United States and is more widely adopted by government agencies and the securities markets in Europe and Asia.

What will you learn?

  • What XBRL is and what it can do
  • Problems in reporting today and how interactive data can help to solve them
  • Who's supporting XBRL and what is the global environment for this new standard
  • Why XBRL versus other standards?
XBRL in action: real-life business cases
  • How you can get started

AGA Launches National Citizen-Centric Project in Saco, Maine
The City of Saco and the Association of Government Accountants (AGA) will hold a city briefing on Monday, March 26 at 10 a.m. to introduce the launch of AGA's national Citizen Centric project and the release of Saco's four-page fiscal report. The report was compiled by the city of Saco with Fiscal Year 2006 data. View an advance copy of the report. The Citizen Centric project asks municipal, county and state governments to publish straightforward reports about their fiscal condition—and to keep them short and easy to understand. These fiscal snapshots seek to honestly and succinctly answer the question "Are we better off today than we were last year?" Most of all, the Citizen Centric project aims to give citizens and activists a better understanding of their local government and inform a more meaningful debate about fiscal priorities. Learn more. CGFM Month Initiative Is An Overwhelming Success!
To recognize the CGFM Program and its accomplishments, AGA has declared the month of March of each year as "CGFM Month."

Thanks to the initiative and dedication of AGA regional and chapter leaders, at least 30 state and local governments have declared March 2007 as "CGFM month." Most of the proclamations have been posted on the AGA website.

Attention Chapter Communicators!
You can bring national recognition to your chapter for producing the best newsletter and website in each chapter group.

Newsletter contest—Send copies of your chapter’s November 2006, December 2006 and February 2007 newsletters to Chris Camara by Friday, April 13. When all entries are in, we will pick ONE month out of a hat and all entries from that month will be judged. Once again, we are inviting last year’s award recipients to be our judges for other chapter groups. (For example, Group A would judge Group B, Group C would judge Group D, etc.) If you received a Chapter Newsletter Award last year and would like to be a judge this year, contact Chris Camara.

Website contest—Judges will review all working websites during the week of April 16 using the chapter listing found online. Please be sure to check your chapter’s information, and inform Jennifer Curtin of any changes. Jenn will contact last year’s website winners about judging.

View a listing of the 2005–2006 contest winners, and read the award criteria. (Log in required.)

Award recipients will be announced in May, but the formal presentations will take place during the 56th Annual Professional Development Conference & Exposition, set for June 24–27 in Nashville. All award recipients must be members of AGA. Stay tuned. More details to come!

AGA to Work on Transitions in Government Project
AGA and member organizations of the Government Performance Coalition will undertake a project to help shape the agenda in the 2008 presidential election by promoting dialogue and debate on budget, management and performance issues in government. The Coalition is ready to start conversation with government managers, campaigns and the public.

The project will use a web-based survey tool in pursuing a comprehensive picture of federal management's experiences and ideas going forward. The final report will be a full finding of the group's work, survey results and dialogue sessions.  Recommendations will be included by each member organization of The Performance Coalition. Coalition members include American University School of Public Affairs, American Society for Public Administration, Council for Excellence in Government, George Washington Center for Innovation and Public Service, IBM Center for the Business of Government, Mercatus Center, National Academy for Public Administration Performance Institute and Partnership for Public Service. For more information, visit www.transitionsingov.org or contact Evie Barry.

Social Insurance: Call for Public Comment; Public Hearing Set
In October 2006, the Federal Accounting Standards Advisory Board (FASAB) released a Preliminary Views document presenting two perspectives regarding appropriate liability recognition for obligations arising in social insurance programs, which are key programs such as Social Security and Medicare. In addition, the Preliminary Views document includes an alternative view proposing to require a Statement of Fiscal Sustainability for the government's consolidated financial report that would provide projections for the entire government, including information necessary to assess the sustainability of social insurance programs and information on intergenerational equity. Comments are due April 16, 2007. In addition, the board plans to hold a public hearing on the Preliminary Views document at the May 23, 2007 FASAB meeting.
