AGA Courses Help Managers Track Stimulus Dollars
Spending billions and billions of dollars of stimulus funds in a hurry is a formidable task. But tracking and accounting for these billions of dollars is far more formidable and much more difficult.

AGA is offering three courses to help in managing and accounting for these funds. They include:

Grants Management—This course provides a general overview of grants management, including preparation, review and submittal of proposals; negotiation and acceptance of grants; post-award financial and administrative management; closeout and audit; and relevant compliance issues.

Contract Auditing—This course focuses on the purpose of contract auditing, types of contracts, audit clauses to include in contracts, types of audits included in contract audit oversight, development of audit programs and internal audit, accounting and financial issues involved with procurements.

Fraud Detection and Prevention—This course is designed to help organizations cut this cost from their programs to reap benefits at the bottom line and in the eyes of stakeholders. In this course you will learn what is fraud; how to detect it in the normal course of program operations; what to do when fraud is detected and how to develop measures to correct practices that enabled fraud to happen.

Taught at the location of your choice, the courses include lectures, group discussion and exercises and class problem-solving. They can be customized to meet your needs and participants are awarded CPEs at the conclusion of each course.

For course pricing and additional information about course content, please contact Bekka Gehrmann, Education Manager, at 800.AGA.7211 ext. 309, or bgehrmann@agacgfm.org.

CGFM Success for Northern Virginia Chapter
The CGFM Chair for the Northern Virginia Chapter set the bar high for himself this program year: Jim Davis wanted to sponsor the training courses, form a CGFM Study Group, increase recognition of the CGFM among area governments, and boost the number of CGFMs by 12.

Less than a year later, 11 Northern Virginia Chapter members and one member of both Washington, D.C. and Northern Virginia Chapters can be proud of earning their CGFM. Among the group is Northern Virginia Chapter President Dennis Green. Davis himself has passed two of the three examinations, with plans to pass the third before the Professional Development Conference & Exposition in June. Green figured he should set an example. He thought, “If I’m going to be president, I’d better get the CGFM certificate,” he said. Read more.

Take the CGFM Examinations Before the PDC
Don't miss the opportunity to take the CGFM Examinations and earn your CGFM before the annual Professional Development (PDC) in New Orleans. AGA is offering a two-day Intensive Review Course on Thursday, June 18, 2009 and Friday, June 19, 2009 and an opportunity to take CGFM Examinations on June 20-21, 2009. The cost of the course is only $249 for qualified participants, and it offers 18 CPE hours. Special Bonus: The CGFM Examinations are offered at no cost to course attendees.

This course is designed as a supplement to previous preparation for the CGFM Examinations, so this is a perfect opportunity for those individuals who have already attended GFM training courses or have been preparing by using the CGFM Study Guides. Enrollment is limited and participants must first apply and be accepted into the CGFM Program, so don't delay.

More information and a registration form for this event are available on AGA’s website.

Free Research Reports Available from AGA
Performance-Based Management—Public officials can speed up and enhance government reforms and transparency through performance-based management (PBM) right now with modest changes to existing information systems. PBM integrates existing financial, operations and other data into eye-opening and actionable facts for enlightened decisions. It is able to consistently track cost and performance over time and improve predictive ability. PBM is flexible, so that different entities can tailor it to their needs and still give top leaders consistent, cross-government views of performance and the cost of creating societal value. Read the report.

Procuring Audit Services in Government: A Practical Guide to Making the Right Decision—Government program and procurement officials routinely procure services to support agency missions and operations. In the case of audits, it is important that acquisition decisions be informed by a clear understanding of the distinction between audits and other evaluative services. This research paper, which is written as a guide, seeks to clarify for the non-auditor exactly what an audit entails, the professional standards followed, who can perform an audit, the value derived from an audit, and the standards and oversight to which government auditors and independent public accountants (hereafter referred to as CPA firms) are subject to when performing government audits. Read the report.
