AGA Corporate Partner Program
___________________________________________________________________________________

For years, private-sector organizations have supported AGA through individual memberships, advertising, exhibits, sponsorships and registrations for AGA-sponsored conferences and meetings along with substantial volunteer efforts. The Corporate Partner Program was developed and launched in 2002 to forge a vigorous relationship between private sector organizations and government leaders—AGA's membership and constituency. In addition to supporting AGA financially and through volunteerism, private-sector organizations bring a wealth of intellectual knowledge and industry viewpoints to AGA members.

As of this writing, AGA has 47 Corporate Partners, including public accounting firms, major system integrators, IT companies, management consulting firms, financial services organizations and education & training companies. These organizations all have long-term commitments to advancing government accountability and choose to partner with and help AGA to move forward as a thought leader in the government community. Click here for a listing of the AGA Corporate Partners and links to their individual websites (http://rmtrgweb.caci.com/aga/docs/ourpartners.cfm)

Corporate Partners choose their level of support either through the Professional or Sustaining Level of partnership. Their membership supports AGA’s work, and in return, AGA provides Corporate Partners with programs and services to keep them in touch with AGA members, opportunities to provide input into Association programs, and discounts and free offers to help them to achieve their organizational objectives.

Corporate Partner Advisory Group (CPAG) Research Program

The AGA CPAG Research Program will create research projects of value to governments, industry and the AGA membership. Two major types of research will be conducted under the program:  sponsored and cooperative, with cooperative tending to have a short (90-day) timeframe, and sponsored being of a longer, continuing nature.

One research project already under way, sponsored by Kearney & Company, is evaluating and assessing current internal control procedures and reporting in the federal community and will develop recommendations for improvement in a white paper or other published study by April 2005. Another sponsored project is Grant Thornton’s Annual CFO Survey, which will be ready for distribution at the 2004 AGA Professional Development Conference. American Appraisal Associates is sponsoring Best Practices Evaluations in the area of Real Property Management, while a consortium of banks and card associations are determining the feasibility of a study on the use of purchase and travel cards.

From the National President: The AGA CPAG: Building the Bridge Between Government and Industry, By Jullin Renthrope, CGFM
___________________________________________________________________________________

The mission of AGA’s Corporate Partner Advisory Group (CPAG) is to bring industry and government executives together to exchange information, support professional development, improve communications and understanding, solve issues and build partnership and trust, thereby enhancing AGA's focus on advancing government accountability. AGA’s Corporate Partner Advisory Group is all about improving access between the private sector and government. After all, we need each other. We share common goals, and we can learn from each other’s mistakes and successes.

Like AGA, the private sector is interested in improving the financial health of governments at all levels. Our Corporate Partners are knowledgeable about the latest industry trends in financial management, technology, auditing and budgeting. Strategies that work well in private companies also may work well in a government setting. The private sector offers services and products that can help government financial managers do their jobs more efficiently and effectively.

The reverse is also true. AGA’s Corporate Partner Program provides many opportunities for private sector professionals to access government officials. Since February, AGA has arranged two small dinners with chief financial officers of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and NASA, giving industry leaders the chance to gain insights from the top finance officials of these large, complex federal agencies.

I’m so pleased that the dialogue between government and industry is improving under AGA’s leadership. Creating partnerships, sharing ideas, talking about common challenges, and preparing studies and analyses of top issues in the field will give all of us new information to do our jobs better.

While the program is still in its early development phases, I’d like to inform the membership about the CPAG plans for this year.

Corporate Partner Leaders Discuss Program Benefits
___________________________________________________________________________________

Let’s say you’re the controller of a large federal agency, and you get a call from a company that offers financial management services. What’s your first thought?

Hank Steininger, CGFM, chair of AGA’s Corporate Partner Advisory Group (CPAG), is well aware that it would be, “What are they trying to sell me now?”

That’s why it’s so important for industry and government to come together through the CPAG, which offers “neutral ground” for both sides to discuss financial management issues, best practices and solutions, he said. The private and public sectors can learn from each other, especially if the conversations never include a sales pitch from industry, and government leaders know they can speak freely.

CPAG’s monthly government executive dinners are very popular for that reason. In the last couple of months, the group has heard from the chief financial officers of NASA and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the deputy chief financial officer of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Attendance is limited, and the atmosphere is one of give-and-take. “One of the key things we emphasize is no selling,” Steininger said. “It’s a forum for dialogue, but not a forum for promoting or selling your services or products.” In turn, the federal officials’ comments are “not for attribution,” so they speak more openly.

"I like the government executive dinners,” said Jim Ferguson, sales executive with Corporate Partner ACL Services Ltd. “I think it creates an environment for discussion. I like that it's not a sales event, we all do enough of that. I really think there's value in continuing to foster vendors and suppliers interacting with real-world people from government." There is Still Time To Participate in the AGA 2003-2004 Recruitment Campaign
___________________________________________________________________________________

You still have time to participate in the AGA “Back to Basics Back to Benefits” recruitment drive. New member applications post-marked to AGA by April 30 will be counted in this year’s campaign.

Recruiting new members and retaining current members takes everyone working together. One of our best marketing tools is the positive experience of other members.

That’s why it’s so important for every member to talk about what they get out of their AGA membership. This can help us widen our scope and aim to reach all accountability professionals at all levels of government. Your experiences can encourage other professionals to take advantage of the inexpensive training events, the opportunity to meet their peers and stay up-to-date in this constantly changing government environment.

National President Jullin Renthrope, CGFM, challenged every member to recruit one new member into AGA before the close of the membership year, which is April 30, 2004. And, he challenged our AGA and chapter leaders to recruit three new members each before the close of the membership year. An array of exciting prizes and awards are part of this year’s campaign, including AGA Dollars. AGA members start earning AGA Dollars after they have recruited two new members—recruit two, receive 10 AGA Dollars. After that, receive five AGA Dollars for every member recruited.

In addition to AGA Dollars, members can work toward these great prizes. If you sponsor three or more new members, you will be entered in a drawing for the grand prize. The top prize is a three-night, four-day stay at a four-star hotel. Airfare and hotel for two are provided (in the Continental United States). Click here for campaign details www.agacgfm.org/membership/mem_campaign.aspx

Success is up to each and every one of us. And remember, if you are a longtime member or brand-new to AGA, each of you plays an important part in moving our Association forward. Click here for a pdf of the AGA membership application and recruit a new member today www.agacgfm.org/membership/join/
