It's
PandaMania! Making Summertime in Washington 'Bear-able'
Buoyed
by the success of its "Party Animals" project two years ago,
the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities kicked off a colorful sequel:
PandaMania. In 2002 the idea was to cover elephants and donkeys, the symbols
of the two major political parties, with entertaining and whimsical designs.
This time it's the giant panda, an endangered species that has fascinated
Washingtonians since a pair of them were given to President Nixon by the
Chinese government in the early 1970s.
PandaMania
will bring 150 panda statues—some standing, some seated and all painted
in a variety of designs—to various locations around the district, from
upscale to inner-city neighborhoods. The commission provided artists with
blank pandas, studio space and a $1,500 honorarium. The exhibition winds
up in September with Panda Palooza, where the city will auction off the
pandas to raise money for artist's grants and education programs.

Past
National President Richard V. Norment, CGFM, CIA, to Receive 2004 Robert
W. King Memorial Award By:
Marie S. Force
As
Richard V. Norment, CGFM, CIA, prepared to become AGA's 52nd National
President during the Spring of 2001, he followed the paths of other Presidents-Elect
by setting a — "Lead to Succeed"—preparing his goals and planning
his travel schedule. He could never have prepared for the terrorist attacks
that occurred just three months into his term, taking the lives of three
AGA members at the Pentagon.
The leadership Norment showed in creating the AGA Relief Effort, which
raised $33,000 for the families of the slain members, is just one reason
that AGA will present Norment with its top honor, the Robert W. King Memorial
Award, at the 53rd Annual Professional Development Conference & Exposition
in June. Click

Want
to Learn More About the CGFM Designation?
If
you are attending the PDC and are considering earning the Certified Government
Financial Manager (CGFM) designation, don't miss the "CGFM: A Valuable
Addition to Achieving Your Career Goals" session on Wednesday, June
30 at 11:45 am. You will hear from colleagues who have recently earned
their CGFM certification about their experience, from the chair of AGA's
Professional Certification Board on the value of the CGFM designation
and from National Office staff on the new training opportunities. You
can also find more information on the CGFM Program on
AGA's
website or by calling 800.AGA.7211, ext. 310.
Results
of the 2003-2004 Back to Basics, Back to Benefits Membership Campaign
The
results are in. A total of 1,243 members joined AGA during the past
membership
year. Of that total, 563 were recruited by 322 current AGA members. Kirk
Schanzenback, president of the New York Capital Chapter, is the recipient
of the Recruiter of the Year Award for encouraging 26 professionals to
join AGA.
Thank you for participating in the 2003-2004 "Back to Basics, Back
to Benefits" Membership Campaign. AGA National President Jullin Renthrope,
CGFM, launched the campaign last fall by
challenging every member to recruit at least one new AGA member.
"Recruiting new members and retaining current members takes everyone
working together," Renthrope said. "I believe one of our best
marketing tools is the positive experience of other members. That's why
it's so important for every member to talk about what they receive from
their AGA membership. This effort can help us widen our scope and aim
to reach all accountability professionals at all levels of government.
Your experiences can encourage other professionals to take advantage of
the inexpensive
training events, the opportunity to meet their peers and stay up-to-date
in this constantly changing government environment."

Working
Many Rooms: When Mingling is Mandatory by Susan RoAne, Featured Speaker
at AGA's PDC
Walking
into a roomful of people, let alone strangers, is daunting whether it's
a community event, a professional association dinner or AGA's PDC. While
the abilities to meet, mingle, converse and connect have a universal schematic,
there are slight differences for each event. For the busy accountant with
a desk full of reports, projects, issues and requests, an e-mail file
full of "urgent" notes or a voicemail box with far too many
messages, the thought of going to an outside event may seem like a luxury.
For some, it feels like a waste of time. The reality is that it's often
an obligation that must be met. Click
here to read the entire article.
