Member News
Two members of AGA’s Central Pennsylvania Chapter have received Governor’s Awards for Excellence from Gov. Edward G. Rendell. They are Rich Cardamone, CGFM, director of the Bureau of Commonwealth Accounting, Office of Comptroller Operations, and Danny Novak, assistant director, Division of Federal Accounting in the Bureau of Commonwealth Accounting. Both Office of the Budget employees, they are among 22 commonwealth employees who received this prestigious award. Cardamone and Novak were among a group of six who were honored for developing a multi-agency approach to prepare and submit federally mandated reports that detail the state’s use of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding. Data integrity was significantly improved, 276 reports were submitted accurately and on time, and Pennsylvanians were given unprecedented visibility into the impact of their tax dollars.

Wallace "Wally" Donnelly, 63, a member of AGA’s New York Capital Chapter, died unexpectedly Dec. 30, 2009. An AGA member since1981, Donnelly headed up the chapter’s involvement in the Voluntary Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program and served for 34 years with the New York State Comptroller’s Office. He also coordinated other VITA programs, volunteered at the local food pantry and donated time to his church. As fellow chapter member Linda Coiffi wrote in the chapter newsletter, “Wally touched so many people throughout the community. He was a gentle, caring man who always had time for others and always treated each with respect.”

Congratulations to Carolyn Marcinek, past president of AGA’s Cleveland Chapter, and her husband, Tim, who welcomed their first child Elizabeth (Libby) on Jan. 1, 2010.

In Their Own Words: AGA Members Tell Us What's In It For Them
“I had known of AGA for a number of years but didn’t seriously consider joining since I was not an accountant.  A few years back, I had an opportunity to join and decided to try it. It was a very good decision. I discovered that many AGA members were not accountants, and those who were accountants were pretty good folks, too. With the broad range of members—be it function or employer or level of government or geography—AGA gives me many different views of the accountability issues facing us all.” —Thad Juszczak, AGA Past National Treasurer, Director, Grant Thornton LLP

April's National Community Service Project Showed Most Progress So Far
By: AGA Past National President Jeffrey S. Hart, CGFM, CFE
Fifteen AGA members/family/friends from around the country—from Washington, D.C. to Washington state and places in between—supported by as many local chapter members, experienced what I thought was the most progress I have seen in the five times we have worked with Habitat for Humanity In New Orleans. I say “progress” both in terms of the progress this unique city has made since Katrina, and also in terms of the progress we made on the two houses we worked on.

The Fourth (& ½) Annual National Community Service project in New Orleans, April 27–30, 2010, was, like the last two years, sandwiched between the two weekends of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Most out-of-town participants paid under $30 per night to stay in new or remodeled University of New Orleans dormitory rooms or apartments, all with private baths. Read more.

AmericaSpeaks Gets Taxpayers Talking about the Federal Budget
AmericaSpeaks, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to involving citizens in public decision-making, is hosting a National Town Meeting June 26 to discuss the federal budget. “AmericaSpeaks: Our Budget, Our Economy” will bring together thousands of citizens reflecting the political, economic and ethnic diversity of the United States to find common ground on some of the tough budget choices the federal government faces. A live webcast and other technologies will connect participants in dozens of cities. AmericaSpeaks is looking for “community conversation” hosts. Participants in community conversations will watch the webcast, learn about the federal budget, discuss options for reducing the federal deficit in coming years and submit their ideas for inclusion in a report that will be submitted to the White House and Congress.
