Past National President Doug Haywood Retires
Past National President Doug Haywood, CGFM, CPA, a member of the Phoenix Chapter, has retired effective April 17 after 31 years with the Arizona Auditor General’s Office to begin his own CPA firm.

The firm, Douglas K. Haywood PLLC, specializes in government accounting and related services.

“During my tenure with the Auditor General’s Office I was fortunate to have Douglas R. Norton and Debbie Davenport as Auditors General,” Haywood said. “Doug and Debbie are strong supporters of the profession, which allowed me the time to serve as AGA’s National President in 1997–1998 and subsequent service as chair of the Arizona Society of CPAs and as a member of the AICPA Council.”

Haywood was recently honored by the AICPA as a life member. “This recognition demonstrates Doug’s dedication and commitment to our profession in the financial management community,” Charles L. Harrison, CGFM, CPA, also an AGA Past National President, said in an AICPA article on Haywood.

Haywood said countless people have served as role models in his life. “All of them share a common thread— these folks have a zest for life, they are passionate about their careers and life in general, and they are compassionate and caring of others; they give of their time, money, and services and seek nothing in return; their enthusiasm is contagious, and they prefer to remain anonymous. I continue to thank them all."

Speakers Added to July 15 Performance Measures Audio Conference
AGA is pleased to announce its latest audio conference, worth 2 CPE hours, on using performance measures to improve operations, set for 2 – 3:50 p.m. EST on July 15.

Accountability. Transparency. Measurement. These are the buzzwords of the day, but the expectations are real that citizens are expecting governments to be efficient and effective. Collecting good data does not improve government operations, however. What improves operations and service delivery systems are the discussions, analyses of the information, and point/counterpoint debates that focus directly on making changes. A new research project, Using Performance Measures to Improve State and Local Governments’ Service Delivery, will determine the extent to which performance measures are being used in government to improve services, regardless of the level of government. The project will follow up with successful practices in applying these techniques to achieve performance goals and provide quantifiable value.

Join Evie Barry, MS, AGA Director of Performance Reporting who will briefly describe the research project; and Fred Klunk, Program Performance and Projection Manager, Research and Development Division, Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole, and Rebekah Stephens, Planning and Performance Coordinator, Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, who will explain their process as they moved toward reshaping service delivery based, in part, on data.

Cost: $249 per site (UNLIMITED ATTENDANCE) if you register on or before Friday, July 10, 2009 and $299 thereafter. SPECIAL PROMOTION: Government agencies and CPAG members who register five or more offices will receive a 20 percent discount ($200 per site)
