AGA's Third Government Finance Case Challenge
The best undergraduate accounting/financial management/business students in the country are invited to compete in AGA's Third Government Finance Case Challenge for undergraduate college students, which runs Oct. 5–20. Student teams will collaboratively construct and design a citizen centric report for a local city government. The registration deadline is Friday, Oct. 2, 2009.

All members of the two highest-scoring teams will receive a scholarship to attend AGA's National Leadership Conference, set for February 2010, in Washington, D.C. Teams will present their solutions before a panel of federal/state/local government leaders, corporate partners and CFOs. The winning team will be announced on the final day of the conference. Cash prizes will be awarded to the winning team, and each student participant will receive a free one-year membership to AGA.

The experience promises to raise the students' awareness of the importance of government accountability and open doors to a future career in government. We need your assistance to make this program a success. If you or your chapter has a connection with a local college or university, please consider contacting the institution to introduce this competition. Learn more. Connect To The Profession Through Chapter Membership
Get Connected! The strength of any association lies with its membership. We learn as much from others as we do from studying, so when you are ready to make new friends, meet colleagues who do what you do, and learn from the most creative people in the field, you can tap into AGA’s vast interconnected community.
To learn if there is a chapter near you, click on the Chapter Locator Map, and look for your region. Each of the more than 100 AGA chapters links with AGA National to share resources, which increase your opportunities for networking and professional development. Many members who are in areas with multiple chapters join more than one to maximize their membership opportunities. If you have not been taking advantage of the many benefits that your chapter provides, take the time to get involved now. Remember: AGA National membership does not include chapter membership. For additional information on how to utilize your member benefits contact Rodneikka Scott.

AGA Volunteers Participate in “Third-and-a-half” Annual National Community Service Project Following the PDC
Fifty AGA members, family members and friends participated in the Third-and-a-half Annual National Community Service project in New Orleans’ Ninth Ward on June 25, the day after the New Orleans PDC ended. I especially want to thank AGA National President Billy Morehead, Ph.D., CGFM, CPA, and other AGA leaders for joining us. This was the third consecutive year, and the second time in 2009, that AGA members and their family and friends contributed their time to build houses in and around Musicians’ Village with Habitat for Humanity for victims of Hurricane Katrina. —by AGA Past National President Jeffrey S. Free Workshop Offered Before Performance Management Conference
On the day before AGA's Fifth Annual Performance Management Conference in Seattle, a free workshop is being offered to introduce AGA's Tool Kit for Preparing a Performance Report. This session set for 1 to 4 p.m. Nov. 4 at the W Hotel and offers 3 CPE hours. Jay Fountain, CGFM, CPA, former staffer at the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) and consultant, will assist participants in determining whether their government entities are ready to produce a report. Templates and examples will be shared to help governments get started. Learn more about this event.

Attendees can attend only the workshop, but they are encouraged to also attend the conference itself, on Nov. 5 and 6. Leaders in performance reporting from all levels of government, the private sector and academia will share how-tos, lessons learned and cooperative initiatives among governments. AGA’s PMC brings together government officials who are using performance reports to measure progress toward achieving their goals every year.

At a time when public demands for transparency, accountability and results have never been greater, performance reports communicate how tax dollars are spent. At the same time, results-based performance measures provide program managers with the information they need to improve public services. Some experts say more and more governments are turning to performance reporting during the economic downturn.

In addition to practical guidance, the PMC offers many opportunities for networking and exchanging ideas with colleagues. Meet leaders in the field, as AGA will also recognize governments that have received gold, silver and bronze awards through the Certificate of Achievement in Service Efforts and Accomplishments Reporting Program.
