Spotlight on AGA's Certified Government Financial Manager (CGFM) Program

New PCB Member Well-Positioned to Help CGFM Gain Greater Recognition

Vandee DeVore, CGFM, one of the newest member of AGA's Professional Certification Board (PCB), has already proven she has the right stuff to help guide the CGFM Program to greater recognition. It was DeVore and other members of the Mid-Missouri Chapter who worked with the Missouri State Division of Personnel last year to ensure the CGFM can be used as a substitute for a bachelor's degree and two years of professional experience for the state's auditor classifications. It took many months and many contacts with state officials to get the job done. Now DeVore, past president of her chapter, is working on solidifying the same recognition for state accountant classifications. DeVore is bringing her experience to the national level, but she is quick to say that better recognition of the CGFM takes grassroots dedication, perseverance and persistence. "It's not going to happen from Washington, D.C.," she said. Click here to read the full article.

Why Wait? Senior Auditor Tackles CGFM Early in her Career

Toni Jo Howard, CGFM, has been with the Georgia Department of Audits and Accounts since she was a junior in college. It was then that she decided to make governmental accounting her career, to further her education and to earn the credentials that would show she was well-qualified. "Once I decided I was going to work here, I first focused on passing the CPA exam, the biggest hurdle to overcome, and I knew I would continue on and get as many certifications as possible," she said. "The next one was obvious - the CGFM." Click here to read the full article.

Tell us About Earning Your CGFM

Over the years we've heard a lot of great stories from people who have earned their CGFM designation:

"Having my CGFM certification will allow me to teach upper-level courses and is considered the equivalent to a CPA, CMA or CIA in this situation. I am finding that the CGFM is becoming more recognized and, in some government positions, is considered more valuable than a CPA."  - Linda "Birdie" Bagwell, CGFM, Texas State University-San Marcos

"Without a doubt, in the governmental accounting and financial world this is a necessity. I hate to go so far as to say it should be mandatory, but this is the right thing to do," - Sam Carter, CGFM, City of Kansas City, Missouri

"My background is so varied that I always look for some way to better myself, to progress, and learn and expand my horizons within my position no matter what I"m doing. So this was a logical step for me to take, to get the CGFM certification,"; - Mary Anne Queen, CGFM, Office of Management Services, Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury

"I know being a member of AGA as well as participating in the CGFM Program as enhanced my opportunities for promotion," - Shaun M. Bridge, CGFM, City of Everett, WA

Improving Government Performance: Financial Managers Take Center Stage
Make Plans Now to Join Us for AGA's Third Annual National Leadership Conference, February 7- 8, 2005, in Washington, D.C.

Sound financial management is more important than ever. Governments are grappling with a growing list of homeland security issues - ;how to keep our cities and our nation safe, and how to pay for it. In this environment, financial managers will take center stage, confronting these challenges and the difficulties of balancing the many competing demands on taxpayers' money. At the same time, governments are focusing more intently on performance to ensure that every dollar is spent wisely, and can be accounted for later. These developments are bringing financial managers into the spotlight.

The National Leadership Conference (NLC) will bring together the top leaders in federal, state and local government financial management, all of whom are struggling to make ends meet while providing an unprecedented level of services to the citizens they serve. This conference is a must for top government leaders - chief financial officers, inspectors general, state auditors, state comptrollers, state treasurers, city auditors, city finance directors and those who work with these top leaders to keep our governments fiscally sound.

The NLC offers unparalleled opportunities to make valuable professional contacts, discuss challenges, discover creative solutions and gain the tools you need to become more effective. Don't miss this opportunity to network with your peers and learn from the best in the government accountability business.

Registration is now open. Advance registration discounts apply to all forms received before January 14, 2005. Click here for more information.

We look forward to seeing you in Washington!
