From the National President
Sam M. McCall, MPA, CGFM, CPA, CIA, CGAP

As I begin this year as AGA’s 56th National President, I continue to be amazed and extremely proud of AGA’s leadership role in government financial management. AGA chapter officers, public and private sector members, and National Office staff are working together to advance accountability at all levels and branches of the government.

In July, more than 1600 professionals attended AGA’s 54th Annual Professional Development Conference & Exposition, held in Orlando. Through the AGA Scholarship Program, which provides two members of each chapter with paid hotel accommodations, a majority of AGA chapters were represented.

During the conference, AGA sponsored a breakfast for new members and first time nonmembers attending the conference. Conference attendees heard from speakers such as Comptroller General of the United States David Walker, CPA, Ian Ball, chief executive of the International Federation of Accountants and other professionals at the highest levels of the financial management profession. There were so many outstanding concurrent sessions that I found myself checking a session in the program that I wanted to attend only to find that I was either speaking or moderating another session at the same time.

At the National Executive Committee Meeting and the National Board of Directors Meeting we learned that federal practice sections of public accounting firms and consulting firms are vigorously encouraging their staff to obtain the CGFM. The designation demonstrates an understanding of the government environment, federal, state and local government financial reporting, and internal controls. At the PDC this year, AGA offered a CGFM review course. Candidates then taking the CGFM Examinations and passing all parts were recognized on stage during opening ceremonies. For those of you planning to attend next year’s PDC in San Diego, AGA encourages you to attend the NBD meeting to participate and observe the Association’s governance structure.

My theme for the coming year is “Accountability Reporting with a Citizen Focus.” I look forward to representing AGA as National President during the year and look forward to meeting chapter members.
