SIGAR Inspector General Honored for Career in Public Financial Management
John Sopko’s Leadership Has Identified $2 Billion in Misspent Funds

(WASHINGTON, D.C., FEBRUARY 16, 2017) — AGA is pleased to honor John Sopko, Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR), with its Distinguished Federal Leadership Award at a ceremony Feb. 16. The ceremony took place during AGA’s National Leadership Training, a two-day training event focused on best practices in leadership and management in government financial management.

Sopko was recognized for leadership excellence and passionate commitment to enhancing sound government financial management practices by aggressively overseeing $117 billion of U.S. funds dedicated to the Afghanistan reconstruction effort. His achievements leading SIGAR include:
  • Investigating mismanagement, fraud and wasted funds to identify around $2 billion in misspent funds, recoup $1 billion in civil forfeiture to the U.S. government and convict 107 people;
  • Establishing a Lessons Learned program to address ways the U.S. government can better allocate and more efficiently spend money going forward; and
  • Investigating a case related to contractors whose fraudulent work led to the deaths of two U.S. service members; the contractors were later arrested.

Sopko has more than 30 years of experience in oversight and investigations as a prosecutor, congressional council and federal government advisor, including key positions in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives.
Doug Glenn, AGA National President, said Sopko represents the best of government financial management.
“John Sopko has dedicated his life to ensuring the efficient use of taxpayer dollars,” Glenn said. “His energy and commitment to thoroughly examining every penny under his watch have saved money and, given the nature of his work, saved lives.”
