President's Message

Looking Ahead to a Prosperous 2016-2017 Program Year
As I step into the President role for the 2016-2017 AGA Charleston chapter program year, my objective is to provide value to our current chapter members, potential chapter members, employers, and the Chapter Executive Committee (CEC). As members of this chapter, we are all seeking similar benefits from AGA.  I plan to work with the incoming CEC to facilitate program activities to maximize those benefits.  The amount of benefits you will gain from AGA is absolutely dependent on the amount of effort you contribute.  I encourage you to reach out to one of our Committee Directors and become active within the chapter so that you can reap the maximum benefits from AGA. We are a growing and evolving chapter, and the CEC appreciates all contributions, participation and feedback from members. If there are particular events or speaker topics you would like to see, please let us know!

I will be working with the new CEC to formulate action plans to achieve specific goals for the program year. One of the goals, which is currently underway, is to create and maintain an appealing, effective, and updated chapter website. We have members located at several different sites throughout the Charleston area, so providing a central source for dependable, up-to-date chapter information is crucial. The CEC is also planning a local Professional Development Training (PDT), which will provide at least 6 hours of CPE and networking opportunities to our members.  More details on the local PDT will be coming soon.  Some of the other goals include increasing our membership to appeal to a greater audience, including state government, local government, academia and young professionals. A diverse membership will allow for valuable networking and the sharing of best practices. We also strive to organize chapter events that will be valuable and enjoyable to our members, providing a high level of networking for our members to make new connections. We plan to expand our CGFM program, organize impactful Community Service initiatives and enhance our budget and financial reporting. We also plan to recognize and publicize excellence in government financial management via awards and accountability programs.

I look forward to working with the CEC, Past Presidents and all chapter members to accomplish these goals and to continue the evolution of AGA Charleston!

Thanks and Congrats to the 2015-2016 Chapter Executive Committee (CEC)!
Our outgoing President, Sarah Mollohan, led the chapter to accomplish a great deal during the 2015-2016 program year. Sarah led efforts to accommodate the newly acquired chapter members from The Citadel Military College of South Carolina and the Army Corps of Engineers. Community Service Chairs Sonji Wallace and Winnifred Waring led impactful Community Service efforts throughout the year, and Treasurer Julie Starkweather helped implement a chapter budget and structured the chapter financial information. Membership Chairs Georgia Middleton and DeAnna Wilson helped the chapter gain new, active chapter members and also helped retain existing members. Education Chair Stacy Johnson led initiatives to provide informative educational events, including a thought-provoking speaker event featuring Dr. Keren Deal. A speaker event was held at the Citadel, where funds were raised for the Charleston Youth Development Center (CYDC) Christmas party from the sale of speaker Colonel Joseph Garcia’s book, “Talk to the Hand…Being a Great Leader is at Your Fingertips”. Meetings Chairs Jenifer Jenkins and Tameka Watts did an excellent job planning and organizing the logistics for these events and chapter meetings. Sarah and the CEC presented a retirement gift to one of the original AGA Charleston chapter members, Jim. Lewis. Former chapter President Beth Da Re added an “IT Corner” and other enhancements to the chapter newsletter. CGFM Chair Peg Kendra played a pivotal role in helping prospective CGFMs reach the designation this past year, including myself. Thank you to chapter Secretary Siobhan Goodman for your assistance with chapter administration and coordinating CEC meetings.

Former chapter Presidents Beth Da Re and Stacy Johnson were instrumental during our 2015-2016 program year, and we appreciate your continued support and guidance.  Osby Mosley was a key contributor to the CEC and I anticipate a successful year with him fulfilling the President-Elect role. Thanks again to Sarah Mollohan for leading all of the 2015-2016 efforts and I look forward to working with you during the 2016-2017 program year!

Have a safe and happy summer!

Best Regards,
