President's Message

I hope everyone had a great summer and stayed safe during Hurricane Florence.

This past quarter, Rebecca Helms, Social Media Director, and I attended AGA’s National PDT conference in Orlando, July 22-25.  There were great speakers on the agenda and many interesting topics, ranging from Robotic Process Automation (RPA) and Blockchain, to GAO Yellow Book and FASAB updates, to Next Generation Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Systems demonstrations.  Mr. John Lynskey, the new National AGA President, was introduced and he outlined his goals for the upcoming year (see the link for his letter to AGA members).  Also, I’m very excited to announce that our Charleston Chapter was recognized as a Platinum AGA Chapter.  The Chapter Recognition Program is designed to support, encourage, and promote AGA's mission, and to provide flexible guidelines for a well-rounded chapter. Award levels are based on the number of credits earned during the year, Platinum being the highest designation.  Thanks to all our members and sponsors for your continued support of the chapter.

Speaking of PDT, our Charleston Chapter PDT is scheduled for November 29, 2018 at Charleston Southern University at the Whitfield Center.  We have scheduled some dynamic speakers to address topics such as information security, federal/state/local accounting standards updates, robotics, and much more.  Please keep your eye out for further emails and social media posts with more details on the event and registration.

Has anyone checked out the AGA podcasts? I recently checked out the episode on Blockchain and Robotics (episode 7).  Robotics is an emerging topic in our industry, and the podcast addressed how the Department of Treasury’s Office of Financial Innovation and Transformation incorporates this technology into a variety of initiatives.  There have been eight sessions posted so far but keep your eye out for new content in the coming weeks.

I’d like to congratulate Jeff Burdick on recently passing the CGFM exam.  Way to go! Please continuing reading within this quarter’s newsletter to hear more about his journey.

I also want to thank and welcome three new CEC members who have accepted positions:

  • Olufunke Olusesi, Newsletter Co-Director
  • Tameka Watts, Newsletter Co-Director
  • Robert Parsons, Accountability Director

Finally, our team had a meeting to set upcoming goals and our strategic plan for the new AGA year which began July 1.  Please be on the lookout for upcoming social events, young professional outreach programs, and developing networking opportunities.  I look forward to seeing everyone at PDT!
