Chapter Community Service

The Des Moines Chapter will be collecting cash and check donations for the following charities at the 2018-19 Chapter events in the months noted below.

July – August: Alzheimer’s Association (Mission: To eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.)

  • Register for the August 25, 2018 Walk to End Alzheimer’s here. Under “Join a Team or Make a Donation”, enter “Joyful Walkers” under “Find a Team”.  The walk will be at the State Capitol in Des Moines.

September – October: AHeinz57 Pet Rescue and Transport (Mission: AHeinz57 is committed to saving homeless companion animals, assisting other shelters/rescues through rescue transports, offering in-home training to keep dogs in their current homes, and educating the public on the issues of over-population, responsible pet ownership and puppy mills.)

  • In addition to collecting money at our September and October meetings, we will be collecting specific goods on the AHeinz57 wish list, including:
    • Crates of all types and sizes
    • Garbage bags: 44 gallon or 13 gallon, only
    • Spray bottles for cleaning solutions
    • Paper towels: Bounty, or equivalent
    • Bleach
    • Disposable latex gloves: Large
    • Newspaper: Rolled and banded with ads removed because they don’t absorb
    • New or slightly used blankets, comforters and towels (no sheets)
    • 30 gallon or smaller plastic bins with lids
    • Dry erase markers
    • Sharpie markers
    • Postage stamps

November – December: Youth Emergency Services and Shelter (YESS) (Mission: Youth Emergency Services & Shelter (YESS) meets the critical needs of the community by providing a continuum of quality programs designed to keep children safe and families together.)

January – February: Food Bank of Iowa (Mission: Alleviating hunger through food distribution, partnership and education.)

  • In addition to monetary donations we will be collecting the following items: dry pasta, cereal, canned soup, toothpaste and soap.

March – April: Everybody Wins! Iowa (Mission: To increase children’s success in school and life through one-to-one reading and mentoring experiences with caring volunteers.)

May – June:  East Side Family, Inc. (Mission: A legacy of a continuous effort to maintain, build, and foster relationships within the community.) East Side Family, Inc. (ESF) is a community organization focused on uplifting, educating and feeding the youth in Des Moines, IA. In April 2016, ESF became a non-profit organization with a mission to help someone in need. ESF believes that hunger is a root to many problems and if ESF can feed, educate and uplift people to help change lives ESF is willing to do that.
