  • Congratulations to Pamela Young, CGFM, for receiving the well-deserved 2020-2021 Volunteer Year of the Award from AGA National! She has done so much and continues to do so much for this chapter as one of our BOD members, co-chair and chair for multiple committees, as we as one of our past presidents.

  • Nine AGA members, namely, Jordan Alonzo, Brad Brunaugh, Adam Buote, Judy Dang, Sheri Sakamoto, Troy Shimasaki, Dwayne Takeno, Edwin Young and Pamela Young, participated in the inaugural School of Accountancy’s Mentor/Coach Program during the University of Hawaii’s fall 2020 semester. The program was spearheaded by e-professor member Dr. Hamid Pourjalali, Director of the School of Accountancy at the Shidler College of Business, Manoa Campus. Pictured above at one of their mentorship meetings is Pamela along with her mentoree, Asia Pai (now a student member), and their guest, Kelli Nishimura, Acting Deputy Director at the City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Budget and Fiscal Services.

  • Congratulations to the graduate team winners of the 2020 Government Finance Case Challenge from the University of Hawaiʻi Shidler College of Business: Chloe Honbo, Denis Mannschatz, and Kristine Santaniello (advised by Associate Professor of Accounting Jenny Teruya, an AGA Hawaii e-professor)!   • Congratulations to the undergraduate accounting students who won 1st place in the Accounting Data Analytics Competition, hosted by TrueUp and Northern Illinois University: Michelle Yim, Camrie Kubota, Isaiah Lopez, and Victoria Kashiwai! (Also under the mentorship of AGA Hawaii e-professor, Jenny Teruya, Associate Professor of Accounting.)

Kristina Tommee, scholarship recipient



Bio: Kristina Tommee was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii. She is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Management Information Systems at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa. Following graduation, she plans to obtain her CPA license and pursue a career in public accounting.





Bio: Aileen Tolentino was born and raised in Waipahu, Hawaii.  She is a junior currently majoring in Accounting at UH West Oahu. She is working towards improving her networking skills and personal development regarding teamwork and leadership.

AGA Hawaii raises over $1,200 for Hawaii Foodbank

Mahalo to everyone for participating in our virtual food drive for Hawaii Foodbank! Hawaii Foodbank has reached out and thanked us for helping to raise over $1,200, which is enough to provide food for 3,000 meals! 

January 2021 Virtual Luncheon Highlights

Stan Lum, CPA, spoke at the January 27, 2021 webinar on the topic of “2021 Tax Updates (Secure Act, Updated Cares Act).” Stan covered changes to unemployment assistance under the Cares Act. He also went over the special rules for use of retirement funds. Lastly, he discussed the Biden Tax Plan.  See our newsletter for more information.

November 2020 Virtual Luncheon Highlights

Dr. Eugene Tian, the Chief State Economist at the Hawaii State Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT), addressed the Hawaii Chapter on COVID-19’s Effect on Hawaii’s Economic Conditions at a virtual lunch time meeting on November 23, 2020. For more information on the event, check out our Kukala Newsletter.
