AGA Tallahassee History

(How it all started...)

AGA was founded as the Federal Government Accountants Association (FGAA) on September 14, 1950, on the initiative of Robert W. King and a group of federal accountants. FGAA became a national organization in 1956. FGAA became the Association of Government Accountants (AGA) on July 1, 1975. On March 14, 2001, a petition was filed with the AGA National Office to form a new chapter in Tallahassee. The AGA National Executive Committee (NEC) met on March 23, 2001, at which time National President Bill Broadus informed the National Executive Committee that he and Executive Director Charlie Culkin had traveled to Tallahassee in February to meet with the State Auditor, State Comptroller, Tallahassee City Auditor and other city officials, and University leaders about the formation of the Tallahassee chapter. Later in that same meeting, Russell Hinton (Georgia) made a motion to approve formation of a new chapter in Tallahassee, and Tom Sadowski (Missouri) seconded the motion, and the motion carried. The NEC approved the charter for the Tallahassee chapter (chapter #100) in May 2001.

Our purpose as stated in our bylaws is: To be a professional organization dedicated to the advancement of government financial management . . . [to] serve its members by providing or sponsoring appropriate educational programs, encouraging professional development, influencing governmental financial management policies and practices and serving as an advocate for the profession . . . [and to] serve government officials and the public by sponsoring efforts to ensure full and fair accountability for all public monies and by providing a variety of pro bono services throughout the United States and its territories that support that end.

We sponsor a variety of activities and encourage all of our members and nonmembers to take advantage of our low cost educational programs for CPE credit and give back to the community through the various Chapter events and awards.

About Our National Organization

With more than 15,000 members across the country, AGA is the conduit that brings together people who wouldn’t ordinarily have access to each other. AGA members are local finance directors, state auditors and federal chief financial officers, but they all join for the same reason, access to the organization that represents the width and breadth of the profession.
