CGFM Certification


Certified Government Financial Manager® (CGFM®) is a professional certification recognizing the unique skills and special knowledge required of today's government financial managers. It covers governmental accounting, auditing, financial reporting, internal controls and budgeting at the federal, state and local levels.

How do you become a CGFM?

To earn the CGFM, individuals must apply for the CGFM program and meet the following requirements:

  • Ethics — read and agree to abide by AGA's Code of Ethics
  • Education — have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • Examinations — pass three comprehensive CGFM examinations
  • Experience — have at least two years of professional-level experience in government financial management

Passing the CGFM exam and obtaining the certification is a worthy way to demonstrate
your commitment and dedication to the industry, as well as enhance your marketability!

Online CGFM Examinations

Skip the mask and stay at home. The CGFM exams can now be taken conveniently and safely at home with Pearson's OnVUE online proctoring. A live proctor will be available for the duration of the exams to monitor candidates through the webcam of their computer. Find more information on scheduling online exams here.

Current Offerings:

The AGA DC Chapter is proud to support our members in obtaining the CGFM designation as follows:

  • Study at Home for Free – AGA offers online self-paced course bundles to prep for CGFM examinations. To support our DC Chapter members, AGA DC will reimburse the costs of study guides and practice exams, which are available to our AGA members.

  • Exam Rebate Initiative – Pass the exams from now through June 2021 and we will reimburse you the cost of each exam. Each exam is $125. A limited amount of rebates are available on a first come, first serve basis.

You must submit the following to qualify:

  1. Copy of passing certification
  2. Proof of payment
  3. Mailing address
  4. AGA member number
