Winter 2017–18 — Integrity & Leadership
Honesty, fairness and accountability — the foundation of government’s responsibility to citizens — should be modeled by leadership, practiced by everyone, and supported by effective strategy and vision. Highlight preferred practices, so they may permeate all levels of government.

Spring 2018 — New Developments in Government Finance
During this season of growth and rejuvenation, we recognize that the government financial management profession is sprouting new developments. Discuss recent events and improvements in accounting, auditing, finance, management service, and planning and budgeting.
Writing deadline: Dec. 1, 2017

Summer 2018 — Building the Profession
People are the foundation and are among the most valuable assets in government financial management. How can we further develop technical and management skills, and mentor new leaders? What emerging trends in recruitment and retention improve our profession, while providing enhanced business management, extraordinary service and public accountability?
Writing deadline: March 1, 2018

Fall 2018 — Restoring Trust in Government
Effective financial and risk management can help stem the erosion of trust in government. How are government entities using enterprise risk management, improved internal controls, reduction of improper payments, and fraud prevention to help restore and maintain stakeholders’ trust?

Winter 2018–19 — Technology Threats, Trends & Tools
Crucial access to data comes at a price. The level of security, technology capabilities, equipment, software and human resource needs vary from one entity to the next. Discuss the shared services, distributed ledger technology, and robotics opportunities ahead while navigating these challenging times of cybersecurity threats and vulnerabilities.

Submission Guidelines

AGA’s Journal Editorial Board picks issue themes to focus attention on matters believed to be of interest to the government financial management community. However, we solicit and accept high-quality, thoughtful articles on a wide range of government financial management topics and may publish articles that do not relate directly to the themes. The Journal will accept material that provides practical insights into any aspect of government financial management. Authors are encouraged to submit articles for review. The Journal Editorial Board is particularly interested in articles from practitioners.

To be eligible for consideration, submitted material must be:

  • no more than 2,500 words;
  • original work that has not been previously published;
  • submitted to the editor at journal@agacgfm.org;
  • using endnote rather than footnote format;
  • accompanied by a 50-word (or fewer) abstract and concise author biographies;
  • accompanied (when applicable) by no more than four charts or graphs, which should be submitted as raw data;
  • and accompanied (when applicable) by concise sidebars.
