Chapter Community Service 2020-2021

The Des Moines Chapter will be collecting cash and check donations for the following charities at Chapter events in the months noted below.

July – August: Alzheimer’s Association  - The Alzheimer's Association® is the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer's care, support and research.

Vision: A world without Alzheimer's and all other dementia.™
Mission: The Alzheimer's Association leads the way to end Alzheimer's and all other dementia — by accelerating global research, driving risk reduction and early detection, and maximizing quality care and support.

COVID-19 UPDATE: In addition to collecting monetary donations for the Alzheimer's Association, the Des Moines Chapter will be participating in the VIRTUAL Walk to End Alzheimer's on Saturday, August 29, 2020 at Brookview Elementary School in West Des Moines. The team will meet and walk approximately a one-mile route on the bike trail. Please note there will not be any services provided (food, drink, bathrooms, etc.), however Jordan Creek Mall and several other businesses are located in the vicinity. Please bring your own water and a face covering and plan to arrive between 9:15 and 9:25 and we will walk at 9:30.

If you would like to join the Chapter at the walk, please use the link below to join team “Joyful Walkers.”  Community Service Director, Kim Knight is the team captain.  This link may also be used to make donations on behalf of the team or individual participants on the team. 

If you would like to order a team shirt ($17-$20 depending upon size, youth to adult 3XL are available), contact Kim.  Orders and payment are due by July 31.

September - OctoberIowa Remembers, Inc. - Iowa Remembers is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charity run solely by volunteers.  Founded in 2010, Iowa Remembers is located in Grimes, Iowa.

Mission: To remember and honor the Iowa military casualties of war from Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation New Dawn. Their sacrifice, and that of all the others who have died, will never be forgotten. 
Annual 5K:  Join members of the AGA Des Moines Chapter at the 11th Annual Iowa Remembrance 5K Walk/Run on Sunday, September 27, 2020 at Raccoon River Park in West Des Moines.  

November - December:  Toys for Tots - Established in 1947, Toys for Tots is the U.S. Marine Corps’ premiere community action program and America’s most popular Children’s Christmastime Charity. It is the combined efforts of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. 

Mission:  The mission today is the same as it was in 1947: to bring the joy of Christmas to America’s less fortunate children.

January - February:  Animal Rescue League of Iowa - The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is Iowa's largest nonprofit animal shelter, caring for many thousands of pets each year.  The ARL serves people and pets from across the state of Iowa through its programs, which include pet adoption, humane education, pet behavior training, spay/neuter, animal cruelty intervention and much more.  The ARL is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Mission:  To promote animal welfare, strengthen the human-animal bond, and prevent the overpopulation of pets.

March - April:  Autism Society of Iowa
The Autism Society of Iowa is an integral part and affiliate of a nationwide association, the Autism Society, that has provided accurate information about autism since its inception in the early 70’s.

Mission: To provide advocacy, support and information to individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders, their families, professionals, and communities throughout the state of Iowa.

May - June:  Food Bank of Iowa  - The Food Bank of Iowa is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit.

Vision:  A hunger-free Iowa.
Mission:  To provide food for Iowa children, families, and seniors to lead full and active lives, strengthening the communities where they live.

Hunger Facts:

  • 175,000 Iowans in the service area struggle to access enough food for themselves and their families
  • That’s one in nine Iowans and one in seven Iowa kids
  • Food Bank of Iowa can multiply your gift, turning $5 into 20 meals or $25 into 100 meals
  • Hunger hinders health, growth, education and work performance
  • Last year, provided nearly 10 million meals to hungry Iowans
