Chapter Community Service 2019-2020

The Des Moines Chapter will be collecting cash and check donations for the following charities at Chapter events in the months noted below.

July – August: Alzheimer’s Association

Mission: To eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.

  • Register for the August 24, 2019 Walk to End Alzheimer’s here. Under “Join a Team or Make a Donation”, enter “Joyful Walkers” under “Find a Team”. The walk will be at the State Capitol in Des Moines.
  • The team T-shirt is available by order only and orders must be placed by noon on July 30.  Proceeds from the shirts will go to the Alzhiemer's Association.

September – October: AHeinz57 Pet Rescue and Transport

Mission: AHeinz57 is committed to saving homeless companion animals, assisting other shelters/rescues through rescue transports, offering in-home training to keep dogs in their current homes, and educating the public on the issues of over-population, responsible pet ownership and puppy mills.

  • In addition to collecting money at our September and October meetings, we will be collecting specific goods on the AHeinz57 wish list, including:
    • Crates of all types and sizes
    • Garbage bags: 44 gallon or 13 gallon, only
    • Spray bottles for cleaning solutions
    • Paper towels: Bounty, or equivalent
    • Bleach
    • Disposable latex gloves: Large
    • Newspaper: Rolled and banded with ads removed because they don’t absorb
    • New or slightly used blankets, comforters and towels (no sheets)
    • 30 gallon or smaller plastic bins with lids
    • Markers
    • Postage Stamps

November - December: UCAN (Urbandale Community Action Network)

This organization works closely with the local government, churches, civic and community organizations, not for profits, citizens and the business community to accomplish common goals and to help make a difference to the people of Urbandale. An example are they are able to provide rides for people in need to doctor appointments and help in other ways as needed.

January – February: Food Bank of Iowa

Mission: Alleviating hunger through food distribution, partnership and education.

  • In addition to monetary donations we will be collecting the following items: dry pasta, cereal, canned soup, toothpaste and soap.

March – April: Everybody Wins! Iowa

To increase children’s success in school and life through one-to-one reading and mentoring experiences with caring volunteers.

May – June: Can Do Cancer

Can Do Cancer is a non-profit organization that works to improve and enhance the lives of breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment in Des Moines and surrounding areas. They provide gift cards, cleaning services, dinners, and moral support during the patient’s journey.
