The Higher Education Committee works to strengthen connections between AGA and the academic community, promoting public service careers and integrating government financial management into college and university programs. Through outreach, curriculum development, and student engagement, the committee helps build the pipeline of future leaders in government accountability.
What the Higher Education Committee Does
Focused on advancing public sector education and workforce development, the committee aims to inspire students, support academic professionals, and elevate the visibility of the Certified Government Financial Manager (CGFM)certification within higher education.
Key Objectives:
- Promote careers in government financial management to college and university students
- Encourage faculty and student participation in AGA programs and events
- Position the CGFM as the premier certification for students entering the accountability profession
- Support the inclusion of government financial management coursework in academic programs
- Promote and encourage research in public sector financial topics by students and faculty
By fostering collaboration with higher education institutions, the committee ensures that tomorrow’s public servants are prepared, engaged, and connected to a strong professional network.
Why It Matters
As government agencies face growing complexity and a wave of retirements, the need for well-prepared professionals is more urgent than ever. The Higher Education Committee helps ensure the next generation of talent understands the importance of public accountability, the value of certification, and the benefits of joining a professional associationlike AGA.
Who Serves on the Committee
The committee is composed of 9 to 15 members, including:
- A Chair and Vice Chair appointed by the National President
- At least 50% academic professionals (including adjuncts)
- One full-time student member, appointed for a one-year term, renewable while student status is maintained
- An AGA staff liaison serving as an ex-officio member
Members are appointed for three-year staggered terms and may serve up to two consecutive terms. The Chair serves a one-year term, with the option for reappointment.
All committee members are selected for their knowledge of the academic environment and interest in fostering stronger connections between academia and the government financial management profession.
Committee Operations and Reporting
The committee is a standing body reporting to the National Governing Board (NGB). It meets as needed to advance its goals and initiatives, and the Chair is responsible for documenting and sharing progress and outcomes with the NGB.
