The Leadership Development Committee plays a critical role in shaping AGA’s future by identifying, mentoring, and recommending qualified leaders for national service. By building a strong, diverse, and strategically aligned pipeline of talent, the committee helps ensure the long-term success of AGA’s governance and mission.
What the Leadership Development Committee Does
The committee supports the National Governing Board (NGB) by recruiting and recommending individuals who bring the right mix of experience, perspective, and leadership potential to guide the association forward.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Establishing criteria and qualifications for national leadership roles
- Proactively recruiting candidates for the NGB, National Council of Chapters, and other national leadership positions
- Reviewing and selecting nominations for the positions of President-Elect, Treasurer-Elect, and At-Large Directors (by February 15)
- Recommending Chapter Directors from the National Council of Chapters (by April 30)
- Mentoring emerging leaders and supporting members seeking to grow within AGA
- Promoting the value of volunteer leadership through outreach, communications, and content contributions
By fostering leadership at every level of the organization, the committee supports AGA’s continuity, innovation, and commitment to member service.
Why It Matters
The strength of AGA’s leadership directly impacts its ability to deliver value, shape policy, and uphold its commitment to government accountability. The Leadership Development Committee ensures that those in leadership positions reflect the diversity, experience, and excellence of the association’s national membership.
Who Serves on the Committee
Committee membership is curated to reflect a broad cross-section of AGA’s community and professional sectors. Members must be AGA members in good standing and include:
- Immediate Past National President (Co-Chair)
- Immediate Past National Treasurer (Co-Chair)
- One representative each from:
- Federal government
- State government
- Local government
- Private sector
- Academia
- Young professionals
- AGA’s CEO (non-voting)
Members serve two-year terms, with the option for reappointment to one additional term. Terms are staggered to maintain continuity and institutional knowledge. Leadership experience at the chapter or national level is strongly recommended (except for the young professional seat). Those actively engaged in the AGA community and mentoring others are especially encouraged to serve.
Individuals seeking a position on the NGB may not serve on this committee.
Meetings and Operations
The committee meets at least four times per year via conference call, or more frequently as needed. All decisions require a majority vote during a meeting or unanimous consent in writing. Co-Chairs lead meetings and coordinate committee activities, ensuring recommendations are timely and well-informed.
