The Professional Certification Board (PCB) safeguards the integrity, relevance, and value of AGA’s Certified Government Financial Manager® (CGFM®) designation. Through strategic oversight and expert guidance, the board ensures that the CGFM program meets the evolving needs of the government financial management profession.

What the Professional Certification Board Does

The board provides direction and oversight for AGA’s CGFM program, working to uphold its standards, promote its value, and expand its impact across all levels of government.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Maintaining the relevance and rigor of CGFM certification standards
  • Reviewing and updating exam content outlines to align with current practices
  • Evaluating policies for eligibility, certification, renewal, and ethics compliance
  • Advising on outreach strategies to grow the CGFM candidate pool
  • Monitoring professional trends to ensure CGFM holders remain current and competitive
  • Supporting program visibility through partnerships, events, and stakeholder engagement

By advancing the CGFM as a recognized mark of excellence, the PCB helps strengthen financial accountability and professionalism in government.

Who Serves on the Board

The PCB consists of nine members (including the chair and vice chair). The board members must be CGFMs. The National President will recommend to the National Governing Board (NGB) for approval individuals to be the board’s chair, vice chair and members. Board members shall be appointed for a three-year term and may be reappointed for one additional consecutive term. The chairperson and vice chair shall be appointed for a one-year term and may be reappointed for additional terms in those capacities. In addition to the nine voting members, AGA’s CEO and the director of professional certification shall serve as nonvoting ex-officio members.

Why It Matters

As the premier certification for government financial managers, the CGFM plays a vital role in ensuring competent, ethical, and forward-looking financial leadership. The PCB protects the credibility of this credential and its value to the public sector and the professionals who hold it.

Meetings and Operations

The board meets a few times a year via video conference, with additional meetings as needed. All decisions require majority approval, and the Chair ensures that board actions support AGA’s mission and strategic goals.
