A dynamic presence in the field of government accountability, Kelly Stefanko’s reputation is built on both expertise and service. Her exemplary leadership and commitment shine in every endeavor, whether she’s mentoring rising professionals or spearheading transformative initiatives.
She began her career as a government auditor and joined AGA in 1994. After graduating from James Madison University, she worked at the Department of Defense, Office of Inspector General (OIG), then moved to the Department of Justice OIG. In 2002, she was appointed Deputy City Auditor for Norfolk, VA. During her time with the city, though connections made at an AGA PDT, she worked part-time with the National Science Foundation OIG as a writer-editor beginning in 2003.
In 2009, she became a trailblazer for remote work by rejoining the federal government as an Audit Manager for NSF OIG, serving as the first staff member to work exclusively off-site. Upon her retirement from federal service in 2025, she is now evaluating potential opportunities for her future career path.
Ms. Stefanko has been a longtime volunteer leader with the Association of Government Accountants (AGA), previously serving in positions such as Chapter President and on national boards, including seven years as a Senior Vice President on the National Executive Committee. She currently holds the role of Area 6 Director and serves as her chapter’s newsletter writer. She is also a member of the Rotary Club of Norfolk.
