There are several reasons why I decided to get certified as a Government Financial Manager. The first was earning power. In one of my accounting college classes, we were told that every certification obtained in your professional career equated to about $10,000 more in salary. I believed it, and I think it has been largely true for me. Another reason was to demonstrate a commitment to excellence and to showcase my knowledge and expertise in Government Financial Management. During my years as an employee in Federal Service, competition for advancement was stiff. I needed every advantage available to enable me to stand-out above the crowd. Not only did I have to do excellent work, but I needed indisputable evidence that I had the critical expertise necessary to be a leader in government Financial Management. Nothing said it better than CGFM after my name.

When I first found out about AGA and the CGFM, my thought was, “That’s me; that’s what I do!” I love the CGFM because it is relevant to my work in governmental accounting and financial management. I even enjoyed studying for the CGFM exams because of how the topics tied into my work and background. The AGA seminars and professional development workshops I attend for CPE hours continue to be interesting and relevant to the work that I perform, so I feel I benefit continually by maintaining my CGFM credential.
That’s why I am proud to be a Certified Government Financial Manager® (CGFM®)
