Certified Government Financial Manager® (CGFM®) is a professional certification recognizing the unique skills and special knowledge required of today's government financial managers. It covers governmental accounting, auditing, financial reporting, internal controls and budgeting at the federal, state and local levels.
How do you become a CGFM?
To earn the CGFM, individuals must apply for the CGFM program and meet the following requirements:
- Ethics — read and agree to abide by AGA's Code of Ethics
- Education — have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
- Examinations — pass three comprehensive CGFM examinations
- Experience — have at least two years of professional-level experience in government financial management
Passing the CGFM exam and obtaining the certification is a worthy way to demonstrate
your commitment and dedication to the industry, as well as enhance your marketability!

The AGA DC Chapter is proud to support our members in obtaining the CGFM designation as follows:
- Study at Home for Free – AGA DC will reimburse the costs of either training modules or study guides, and practice exams, which are available to our AGA members. A limited amount of reimbursements are available on a first come, first served basis until funds for the program year are exhausted.* (Members do not qualify if your employer has reimbursed your study materials.) See below for a listing of all study related resources available for reimbursement.
To be eligible, you must submit the following:
- Proof you have scheduled the exam
- Proof of payment
- Mailing address
- AGA member number

Exam Rebate Initiative – Pass the exams from now through June 2024 and you could be eligible for reimbursement*. A limited amount of rebates are available on a first come, first served basis until funds for the program year are exhausted. (Members do not qualify if your employer has reimbursed your exam expenses.)

- Copy of passing certification
- Proof of payment
- Mailing address
- AGA member number
Submit the above documentation to Sara Specht via email to obtain a rebate.
*The Washington DC Chapter will provide each Washington DC member reimbursements up to $135 for the program year of 2023 to 2024. A limited amount of rebates are available on a first come, first served basis until funds for the program year are exhausted. (Members do not qualify if your employer has reimbursed your exam expenses.)

Study Guides - AGA offers CGFM study guides in two convenient formats - print (hard copy) version and online access.
- Print Version - Study guides are now available in the AGA CGFM Bookstore. The study guides now include a binder.
- Online Access - Study guides are now available online through a six-month subscription. The guides can be viewed on- and off-line, through an app. To buy or access the online guides, click on the corresponding link below:
Training Modules - AGA offers CGFM Training Modules, which are currently available in course bundles for all portions of the CGFM exams. These modules are currently available for purchase here.
Practice Exams - In addition to study guides, AGA provides practice exams for use in studying for the CGFM exam. To purchase and/or access your practice exams click here.
CGFM Examinations
Online - The CGFM exams can now be taken conveniently and safely at home with Pearson's OnVUE online proctoring. A live proctor will be available for the duration of the exams to monitor candidates through the webcam of their computer. Find more information on scheduling online exams here.
