Higher Education Committee
I. Purpose
AGA’s Higher Education Committee seeks to increase interest in careers in public service, to share with students the benefits of professional certification and the importance of joining a professional organization like AGA, and to encourage institutions of higher learning to offer and/or expand governmental financial management courses.
II. Objectives
- Promote careers in public service, particularly in government financial management, among college and university students.
- Encourage participation of academic professionals and their students in AGA programs and activities.
- Advance the CGFM as THE certification for government accountability professionals for students seeking to differentiate themselves in the market.
- Encourage the inclusion of government financial management content in the curriculum at institutions of higher learning.
- Encourage government financial management research among academic professionals and students in institutions of higher learning.
III. Committee Authority
The Higher Education Committee is a standing committee of AGA and reports to the National Governing Board (NGB).
IV. Committee Structure
The committee shall consist of nine to fifteen members (including the chair and vice chair). The National President shall appoint the committee’s chair, vice chair and members in accordance with AGA Bylaws.
Committee members shall be appointed for a three-year staggered term and may be reappointed for an additional three-year term. No member shall serve more than two consecutive terms. The chair shall be appointed for a one-year term and may be reappointed for additional terms in that capacity. At least 50% of committee members will be academics (including adjuncts), and all members will be knowledgeable about the academic environment. One of the committee members shall be a full-time student, who will be appointed for a one-year term and may be reappointed for additional terms while maintaining student status. In addition to 9-15 members, AGA National staff will provide at least one staff liaison to serve as ex-officio member(s)on the committee.
V. Committee Reporting
The chair of the committee will ensure appropriate work deliverables of the committee are documented and reported to the NGB.
